Tone Generator is an application written in Java designed for musicians
or people interested in some basic properties of sound waves.
It creates sounds based on sine waves which are optionally composed of many sound-waves or harmonics.
See below for instructions.
The application was originally designed with a musical training use in
mind. It works very well as a drone-creating device to be used while
warming up. I use it regularly and it has great effects. If you're
familiar with the
Tuning Tactics
program, you'll understand the
benefits of practicing with a drone, and not just a sine wave, but a
complex sound, which this program excels at creating. Some example
warm-ups will be coming shortly, but for now, an easy way to get
started is
- Select the key of the warm-up you're about to play.
- Press the Preview button
- Play your warm-up.
- Next, either:
- Play another warm-up exercise in the same key.
- Change the note on the Tone Generator.
- Press the button you pressed to begin tone generation (should be `Stop' now).
You may notice that it is easier to use the Tone Generator with
headphones if your speakers aren't loud enough for you to blend your
sound with the tones. If you use very good headphones, you may want to
put one ear higher on your head, so you can hear your beautiful, in-tune sound.
A short walk-through explaining all the elements of the program is
coming soon, but it shouldn't be too difficult to figure it out on your
own through the age-old art of tinkering. Happy Tone Generating!
